Some info on the gap year, picking an essay topic and more.

DSC02324The gap year Typically a year spent working, traveling or interning, and hopefully maturing, after high school graduation and instead of attending college in the fall, the gap year is not meant to be a year off. Picking a topic for the college admissions essay I think high school students, and their parents, agonize more over the essay than almost any other part of the college application process. In this post on the New York Times’ “The Choice” blog, Alan Gelb, author of “Conquering the College Admissions Essay in 10 Steps,” breaks down the process of choosing an essay topic.

Also, my guest blogger Stephanie Jones McCaine, a college admissions director at Purchase College, SUNY, explains what she and her admissions colleagues are looking for in an essay in her post.
